Review | Lavanila Healthy Deodorant

I like to think of myself as a deodorant connoisseur. From regular to clinical, stick to roll on, conventional to homemade, I’ve tried it all.

I sweat, alright? I mean, I’m not incredibly sweaty and stinky, but I’m an active girl. I walk the dog everyday, do yoga, dance, hoop… I prefer to be moving rather than sitting. It’s natural to sweat, and I think sometimes people think they have issues when they notice they’re a little ripe smelling at the end of the day. Homie, you don’t got issues. You normal. You just need a good deodorant.

For years I spent looking for the best deodorant, and it seemed like every time I found one I liked it would stop working eventually. And then came the theories suggesting that deodorant could be a big cause of breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other serious health conditions! What! We’ve been putting this stuff right by our lymph nodes since middle school!

Thus began my natural deodorant quest. First I tried homemade with ingredients like coconut oil, baking soda, and other essential oils to no avail: they all made me feel damp, didn’t keep me stank-free, and stained my shirts. Moving on to store bought: I got a Tom’s Natural deodorant for free from Wanderlust, and even though I’m kind of anti-Toms (I feel as though they mislead customers into thinking their ingredients are cleaner than they are), I tried it and holy crap man. That shit was fowl. If you want to smell fifty times worse than you would with no deodorant at all, then buy Tom’s. Otherwise, please let’s sign a petition to have every tube of that junk burned. It’s that bad.

But enough back story. On with the review.

At a recent (and rare) trip to Whole Foods I picked up Lavanila Laboratories’ Healthy Deodorant in the scent Vanilla Grapefruit. I heard about Lavanila years ago but never purchased because I heard nothing but negative things and it has a steep price. But because of Tom’s recent blunder and my desperate need for a new deodorant that I wouldn’t be afraid of killing me, I took the risk and bought it.

From lavanila.com:

This All-Natural, freshly scented deodorant provides superior, long-lasting odor protection. Soothing essential oils blend with powerful anti-oxidants and beta glucan technology for daily defense and nourishment. Clinically Tested. Dermatologist Recommended. No Aluminum. No Paraben. No Propylene Glycol. No Harsh Chemicals.

Traditional Deodorants and Antiperspirants can contain ingredients including aluminum, Propylene Glycol and Parabens that could potentially absorb into the delicate underarm area.

The Healthy Deodorant is a 100% Healthy solution. Completely free of harsh chemicals, it’s a safe, effective and luxurious way to fight odor. Our health-promoting formula is packed with anti-oxidants and a proprietary beta glucan technology to not only fight odor, but nourish, strengthen, and soothe the skin.

I love this stuff. I want to celebrate. I want to yell it’s name from the rooftops. Here’s why:

Value: Yeah, it seems insane to spend $13 on deodorant. But then I realized that I’ve been spending $11.99 for Secret Clinical Strength for years now and that stuff is nothing but junk. In the end, yeah it’s pricey, but it’ll last me a long time because I never need to reapply it on an average day.

Product: The formula is awesome. Unlike most natural deodorants, it actually keeps me feeling pretty dry and it truly keeps me stink-free. While it doesn’t keep me desert-dry, I don’t mind because it’s NATURAL to sweat! But it doesn’t make me feel as damp as my homemade deodorant attempts and keeps me totally fresh smelling. It has my boyfriend’s sniff of approval (he’s the one that very gently told me I smelled dank with that Tom’s junk). I enjoy the scent and I’m eager to try the others listed on lavanila.com.

Packaging: It’s cute! I love it. I could do without the screw-top, and would prefer a pull-off lid, but who cares. It’s pretty and looks nice sitting on a bathroom sink. But strangely, the think I love most about it is that it’s round. Maybe it’s just me, but when I apply normal deodorant I struggle with not getting it everywhere! It always goes on the outside of my arms, which in turn gets it on my clothes, my car seats, people I hug, my pets, my children if I even had any, my leggings when I do yoga, and pretty much everything. Maybe I have small arm pits? Perhaps. Anyways, the product is round which helps it apply to my pits, and my pits only.

Overall: Please try this. Plz. Every body’s chemistry is different, so you might hate this, or you might love it as much as me, but it’s worth a shot. I’m so thrilled to have found a deodorant with great ingredients that, most importantly, does it’s job.
