BEST WEEKEND EVER—Wanderlust Fest – Squaw Valley 2014

I cannot even begin to describe the bliss and magic cultivated at this year’s WLSquaw… I truly can’t. But I will try my best.

Thursday, July 17
We actually didn’t have a pass for Thursday. We had Sage (3-day) tickets for Friday, Saturday, & Sunday. But the awesome thing about WL is that you can still have a blast without a full ticket. You can still shop, get free samples, watch performances, and (for a cheap price) buy a music only ticket.
Anyways, Thursday was incredible. I signed up to be part of a Nahko and Medicine for the People music video. Just as we about to hike to our filming location it started hailing like crazy! I’m talking hail the size of marbles. It hailed and poured for about an hour, then we took the risk (with lots of filming equipment) and ventured into the redwood forest. On the way up I talked to the sound guy named Mark. He told me how he got this gig through connections. Talk about lucky!
For the music video there were two groups: those who new all the lyrics to Aloha Ke Akua and those of us who new most, but not all. I was in the latter. The first group appeared from behind trees as Nahko played his guitar walking through the forest. Me and the others were the group that were “already partying” at the finishing spot. We danced, did yoga, acro yoga, hooping, played instruments… It was awesome… and all live. So yes, our voices are in the video singing along with Nahko’s. INSANE. My voice is awful too, so I’m praying that Mark didn’t catch my voice with that mic!

Nahko is the most down-to-earth, normal, incredible musician ever. He made an effort to meet all of us and was so goofy and hilarious. At one point he was shaking a little shrub tree at me in this weird voice and I was dying. After about 5 takes we called it a wrap.
My tribe were awesome. We walked back together laughing and joking, and at one point stop-drop-and-acro-yogaing. One couple live out of their van and I am so envious. My favorite part about Wanderlust are the bright souls I meet every year.

Later that evening we went to the Nahko campfire. A huge group of us gathered around a (propane) campfire while Nahko (and later MC Yogi) and some of the medicine tribe jammed and hung out with us. It was tons of fun listening to their voices and stories.

Friday, July 18
We started off our first day of Wanderlust with a “meditation” (it was more like a lecture/talk) with Sally Kempton, the author of Awakening Shakti. It was interesting, but a little too… strange for me? That’s not the right word. I’m all for channeling goddesses and their stories to find understanding, guidance, and strength in life, but the way Kempton was talking about it made it seem like she was saying that these goddesses actually exist. It’s fine if you believe that, but I don’t so it was a little too far off the radar for me, but I still found it interesting.
Right after our lecture we had a great Breast Cancer awareness class with Shiva Rea. It was challenging. It was my first yoga class in week or so, so I felt it. The beginning was my favorite part. After receiving free, pink prAna mats, we all got in a circle with those egg shakers and danced and grooved together. It was so fun.

After Shiva’s class, we had a charkra-based class with Seane Corn. I love her! I had never taken a class with her, but I new she was a big name so I knew it would be good. We started the class with her telling us the “Billy Story” and it was so powerful and a great way to start class. I loved how the class wasn’t super complex, but full of wisdom. She talked the entire class and I really wish I had brought a notebook.

We were done with activities by 3:30pm. After grabbing some food at The Green Truck (mmm veggie burger with beet sauce) we walked around and shopped a bit before getting ready for the Nahko and MFTP performance. My good friend and old roommate Monica showed up at about 6:30pm or so, which was so exciting!

Before the show Monica and I took advantage of our Happy Hour tickets and got our free drink (kombucha and vodka… so yogi) and then went back and got a bigger vodka lemonade-type drink. Yum! Then it was time to dance!

photo 3I can’t even begin to tell you how mind blowing the Nahko performance was. I’ve never had so much fun at a show. I danced my pants off (literally, like they were falling down from dancing so much). I’m set on seeing them again soon. If you’ve never listening to them before, you NEED too! Their music is medicine!

Afterwards Nahko was incredible and came down to take a million pictures and hug and talk to every person who wanted to. Even the rest of the medicine tribe came down to dance to the next show with everyone. After about fifty girls literally threw themselves on Nahko, he saw me and I just smiled and waved. He reached out and grabbed my hand and pulled me over and we hugged and I told him how awesome the show was.

He kissed my cheek like 5 times (*swoon*) and thanked me for doing the music video and coming to the show and invited me to go out with them after. After exchanging phone numbers he went to set his stuff down and I went to the hotel room. At about midnight he texted me and asked where I was but I was way too tired to go out (and I had to be up at 7 the next morning). Part of me is like, wow Kaylie, you blew it, why the hell didn’t you go!? and the other part of me is like, Good job, Kaylie, you were responsible and didn’t go out late and drink and be a groupie because you have a boyfriend and had to be not grumpy the next day! I’m just going to stop thinking about it so I don’t regret it!

Saturday, July 19
Oh. My. God. So after waking up early, Monica and Kelly (a family friend of mine who came along too with her mom) were excited for our “beautiful, fun hike.” I am cringing just thinking about it.
Have you ever been to Squaw? You know that HUUUUGE mountain called “High Camp”? You know, the one you take a 5 minute tram to? Yeah, we hiked that. I have never wished I was dead so much in my life than on that hike.

I am not in bad shape. I’m extremely fit and love to hike and be active. But this hike nearly killed me. The (horrible) combination of drinking the night before, staying up late, not getting enough sleep, eating half an apple for breakfast, and having DEAD legs from 3 hours of yoga the day before, and being at super high altitude made the hike unbearable. At a few points I felt mentally defeated as my lungs heaved and my heart pounded. The altitude made me struggle for breath and difficult to keep moving. But finally, after two hours, we made it to the top and took the tram down.

After our hike Monica and I went straight to a Seane Corn detox class. I literally sat and stared the entire time. I was dead. Then after that we went straight to High Camp to do a class called Inversion Elixir with Tiffany Cruikshank. This class I did most of, but for pretty much the entire ending I sat and ate blueberries. Oh, and there was a little white dog (I think it was Tiffany’s?) that took a shit a few feet from where we were practicing and I nearly died laughing.

After the class Monica and I grabbed food and she headed out to go to her family’s cabin and shower and relax before the music. I ate my food in the hotel then passed out for an hour and a half. It felt soooo good.

When I woke up my mom reminded me that we were going to dinner at the Squaw Resort restaurant for her birthday. Monica met us there and we had a good time eating and drinking watermelon sangria. Mmmm.

The music that night was great. We missed DJ Drez, but he DJ’d for MC Yogi (who was awesome). We danced our little hearts out even though we didn’t know any of the words.

Sunday, July 20
I couldn’t believe that it was Sunday already. The weekend went by soooo fast. It was probably one of the best weekends of my life.
The day couldn’t have started out better. Monica met up with us and we went to our SUP (stand up paddle board) yoga class at the top of high camp! It was so fun! It was (obviously) much more challenging doing yoga on liquid, but it was such a great core strengthener. I was able to do mermaid pose for the first time and I even did a headstand. *I REALLY wish we were able to get pictures, but there was no way we could take our phones out there. The company, Yoga on Liquid, took pictures but they haven’t posted them yet. Once they did I’ll put them here!*

After that Monica and I changed into our fun pants and went to our hooping class with Shakti Sunfire. It was such a good time! I can’t believe how much we learned in a short amount of time. I even bought a hoop (meant for hooping and tricks) and I’m so excited to keep practicing. I LOVE it!

After hooping Monica and I went to our last Wanderlust activity: a class led by MC Yogi and DJ’d by DJ Drez. Oh my gosh, I’ve never had so much fun in a yoga class. We danced and clapped and boogied in every pose. We were laughing so hard and having such a good time. *Photos of Sunday Wanderlust events aren’t posted yet, but once they are I’ll post the MC Yogi class pics here!*

And that was it! About an hour after our last class we packed up and left. It was the best weekend ever. As I’m typing this at my desk at work I can feel the post-festival depression. I’m trying to fight it off but how can I when WL is the BEST weekend ever and I have to wait a whole year for it again! Ahh, I can’t wait.

After sitting in a lot of traffic and being hungry and tired, I was thankful to be home with my puppy and in my own bed. She even had an BarkBox to open and I had a few packages from iHerb with some products I’ll review soon!

photo 4Did you go to Wanderlust this weekend? Or any of them? What did you think? I hope you all had an awesome weekend too.

Peace, love, and adventures,
Kaylie
